So Fat, You Can Taste It

so apparently scientists have discovered we have a new gustatory sensitivity–to fat:

So Fat, You Can Taste It

Everyone knows that fat is an excellent vehicle for food flavors and has a highly appealing mouthfeel. A new study, however, suggests that along with sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (essentially, the ability to detect protein), we can also actually taste fat itself.

and this is really interesting:

The higher a person’s fat-tasting sensitivity, the fewer fatty foods that person ate, and the lower that person’s body mass index was.

Green Sea Slug Is Part Animal, Part Plant

It’s easy being green for a sea slug that has stolen enough genes to become the first animal shown to make chlorophyll like a plant.

this is why you’re a honky

so we all know the basic idea that UV, sunlight, and vitamin D concentrations are responsible for the general changes in skin tone in people living from the equator to the poles…but this is a really interesting article about why northern europeans are even more different than everyone else–light hair, blue eyes, even paler skin–and the science behind it:
Why Are Europeans White? (E1)

i know most of you are lazy and probably won’t read the whole thing so here’s a good summary:
The Baltic is the only place on earth where ocean currents keep it warm enough to grow grain despite dim sunlight.
When the inhabitants of this region switched to grain about 6 KYA, they suddenly got insufficient vitamin D to survive. They had stopped eating mostly meat and fish in a place where sunlight was too dim to produce vitamin D in normally pigmented skin.
And so they adapted by retaining into adulthood the infantile trait of extreme paleness. Blonde hair and blue eyes were other infantile traits that were just swept along accidentally.

Evolution in the deepest river in the world

so i know the majority of the shit i post is funny/weird and requires no intellectual ability whatsoever to comprehend, but the fact of the matter is that i’m still a bio dork at heart and so i’m going to post some sciency shit i find interesting as well:

New species are born in the turbulence of the Congo River

basically this article is about this river being so deep in the middle that the strong currents separates fish on both banks, allowing them to evolve separately over time…but the best part of the article for me was what they named the fish:
“Mondeli bureau,” says the fisherman who brought it to her, pointing to the fish. Stiassny smiles. The name translates as “white man in an office” and plays on the locals’ vision of a computer-bound Westerner: blind, albino, stunted. hahahahahahaah
